Your interview is in 15 minutes.
Your palms are sweaty, your heart is racing, and your mind is flooded with questions.
"What if I forget what to say? What if I make a mistake?"
If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Feeling nervous before a job interview is completely normal. The good news is that a few simple mindfulness exercises can help you calm your nerves and walk into your interview with greater confidence.
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment on purpose, without judging it.
Instead of worrying about the past or future, mindfulness exercises can help you focus on what's happening right now!
Use these quick techniques before your interview.
Focus on Your Breathing 🌬️
Your interview hasn't happened yet. Instead of thinking about everything that could go wrong, focus on what is happening right now: your breath, your body, and this moment.
When you feel nervous:
Take a mindful breath in for 4 seconds. Before your interview, pause for a moment and take a slow, deep breath.
Hold for 4 seconds.
Exhale slowly for 4 seconds. Notice the air moving in and out of your body.
Repeat 3–5 times.
Benefits: As you focus on your breathing, you're practicing mindfulness — paying attention to the present moment without getting caught up in worries about the future.
Mindful Self-Talk
When people feel nervous about an interview, they often engage in negative self-talk. These thoughts can increase anxiety and make it harder to focus. Replacing them with mindful self-talk can help reduce negative self-talk and interrupt the negative cycle.
Mindful self-talk encourages a more balanced perspective. It reinforces confidence, emotional resilience and helps you respond more effectively to stress and uncertainty.
Negative Self-Talk
"I'm going to mess this up."
"Everyone else is more qualified than me."
"What if I can't answer the questions?"
"I need to be perfect."
Mindful Self-Talk
"I'm prepared" reminds you of the time and effort you've invested.
"I have valuable skills and experiences to offer" puts the focus on unique ways you can contribute.
"I can handle this interview" reinforces your ability to respond to challenges.
"I don't need to be perfect" reduces the pressure to perform flawlessly.
