Giving gifts is your love language and you want to give something special to your loved ones.

You received a birthday invitation for your 5-year-old cousin. This might seem like a challenging task, especially since it feels like your cousin Ashley already has every toy imaginable.

Also, Ashley is unlikely to settle for an Amazon gift card or cute mug.

You might ask: "Then what are you suggesting? What should I get her, I was going to buy her a gift card?"

Don't stress, this "process" can be easier than you think it is.

The gift giving equation

Before going to the mall or loading the Amazon app, consider the child's favorite hobbies, characters, or themes. Focus on their skills and level of development, not just their age.

If your love language is gift-giving, this equation is very helpful when considering a gift for a child:

The child’s interest + the child’s ability = THE perfect present!

You want to see that reaction on the child's face when opening the present.

How do I find the ultimate gift?

Choosing the "perfect" toy for a child can be hard and daunting for some. When you think of it, toys aren't just something to entertain and pass the time with. They can be beneficial for children in their growth and development.

Therefore, when choosing toys, focus on those that stimulate the child's senses while also considering the child's age and developmental capabilities.

Some examples include:

  • Kinetic sand

  • PlayDoh

  • Fidget spinners

  • Musical instruments

Keep toy safety in mind!

Consider the safety of the toy you choose before buying it.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Does it have small pieces they can swallow and/or choke on?

  • Does it have sharp edges that can hurt them?

  • Is it fragile and can break easily?

  • Does it have small magnets they can swallow?

  • Does it contain chemicals that can be harmful?

How will I know what they like?

Kids are always changing their minds about their likes and dislikes, especially regarding toys and games, either out of boredom, friends, ongoing trends, etc.

An older sister from Rugrats talking to her younger brother: 'Oh yeah?' and he replies with, 'I changed my mind.'

These steps can be useful when you're shopping for a gift:

  • Set a budget for each gift.

  • Keep a mental record of what they mention throughout the year or the months leading up to their birthday.

  • If they're still interested in the gift when their birthday comes closer, take it as a sign that they still want it, especially if it's something you feel would benefit their skills development and stimulate their senses.

  • When shopping during sale seasons, look out for potential options and keep a stock of them at home, for those surprise invites you get throughout the year.

  • If you get really stuck, ask them directly what they would like for their birthday (as long as it's within your budget, of course).

  • For older children, cash is their best friend.

"It's all about the experience!"

Life's experiences create memories that last a lifetime, bringing more happiness than material things. While material items can sometimes enhance an experience, it’s the moments themselves that create the most vivid, powerful, and lasting memories.

Creating these memories doesn't have to be expensive or elaborate. Often, the "less is more" approach works best.

Here are some ideas for creating meaningful experiences for a child on their birthday:

  • Game night with simple prizes

  • Go to the cinema to watch their favorite movie

  • Have a picnic by the beach or at their favorite park

  • A trip to the mall with friends

  • Gift experiences such as piano lessons, rock climbing lessons, or cupcake decorating classes

  • Have a sleepover and do all your favorite things

  • Quality time with their favorite people, e.g. mom, dad, aunt, uncle, cousin...etc.
