Quiz
Josie is testing her students to help her plan the next couple of lessons. Is this an example of assessment for learning or assessment of learning?
The purpose of Josie's test is to find gaps in her students' knowledge. As the results will help her to develop future lessons, then this is an example of assessment for learning. If the test was at the end of term and Josie had no plans to teach this topic further, then it would be an assessment of learning.
Assessment examples
💡 Remember, it's the purpose that defines if an assessment if used "for" or "of" learning.
For example...
👉 A test used at the start of the year is an assessment for learning, as it shows students and teachers what they need to do to improve. However, the same test used at the end of term would be an assessment of learning!
What assessment would you choose?
Dom is a 6th-grade teacher and wants to find out what math level his students are in.
He wants to use that data to see how he can support his students to get better grades.
He thinks of 4 options:
A
Holding an exam at the end of term.
B
Asking each student to reflect on what they find difficult.
C
Getting his class to complete a short formative assessment.
D
Asking their previous teacher for their grades.
Quiz
What would be the best assessment choice for Dom?
Holding a formative assessment will give Dom the information he needs to adapt his teaching and support his students. Asking students to reflect could be helpful, but some students may not give a true account of their performance. Holding an exam at the end of term is too late and asking the previous teacher isn't an assessment and doesn't account for any improvement they made over the summer.
