It can be difficult to come up with an answer on the spot. Use the STAR technique to prepare examples in advance.

Scenario

Let's look at a specific example.

Tell us about a time when you had to work with a team to complete a project on a tight deadline.

Situation

  • What was your role?

  • When did the event happen?

  • What were the circumstances?

3 years ago, I was working as a marketing manager at Company Y. We discovered a missing piece on a project the week before it was due.

By assigning tasks based on the strength of each team member, and keeping the lines of communication open, we completed the missing piece with a day to spare. The client was so impressed he hired us to work on his next campaign.

Take Action

Use STAR when an interviewer asks, "Tell us about a time when you ... "

  • Situation: Set context for the story, including obstacles to overcome.

  • Task: Describe your responsibility in that situation, goal, or desired outcome.

  • Action: Explain exactly what steps you took to achieve the desired outcome.

  • Results: Share the outcome of your actions, including successes and lessons learned.
