Quiz
Ada is giving feedback on Toni's performance on the job. Which of these will be effective?
Ada should set a meeting to discuss Toni's performance. At the meeting, Ada should share a variety of feedback from different people on the team, and allow Toni to self-assess her performance. Only focussing on positive feedback will not help Toni improve her performance on the job.
Types Of Feedback
Feedback comes in three forms: appreciation (thanks), coaching (here’s a better way to do it), and evaluation (here’s where you stand).
APPRECIATION: It is fundamentally about relationship and human connection. It motivates us and gives us a bounce in our step and then energy to redouble our efforts.
COACHING: It is aimed at trying to help someone learn, grow, or change. This happens when one asks for more direction from like their boss.
EVALUATION: It tells you where you stand. It’s an assessment, ranking, or rating.

Giving Feedback Effectively
The whole purpose of feedback is to improve performance.
Check your motives. Before giving feedback, remind yourself why you are doing it.
Be timely by addressing issues as soon as they happen.
Give feedback on a regular basis and prepare your comments so you keep your feedback specific.
Provide feedback in private and give feedback only from your perspective using "I" statements.
Limit your focus to no more than two issues at a time.
Talk about positives as well as follow up after the initial conversation.
Quiz
What should you focus on when giving feedback?
It's all about helping people improve, so focussing on a long list of their negative behaviors will not show them the way forward. Keep it focused on the one or two things that will directly improve their performance.
